Social rent policy
The Government are looking to make changes to the way rents for social housing are calculated from 2015. The main proposals are:
- to move from weekly rent increasing yearly by being linked to the retail price index + 0.5% (plus and optional £2 extra) to rent increasing by being linked to the consumer price index + 1%.
- to abolish rent convergence. This is where a landlord can choose to charge an extra £2 a week in order to bring lower rents in line with other rents in the area
- to eliminate the rent polciy for social housing tenants that have a household income of at least £60,000 pa.
