Update on universal credit

30 Oct 2013

It seems that there is no firm timetable for the roll out of universal credit.  Under universal credit a number of benefits including housing benefit will be merged into a single payment paid direct to households.

Originally the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) planned to have all new claims for straightforward cases (to single people with no dependents or disabilities) onto universal credit this month.  This was changed to just 6 areas, however the DWP have now stated that new claims are only being taken in Hammersmith and Fulham, and will be rolled out to the other 5 areas in February2014. (The other areas are Rugby, Inverness, Harrogate, Bath, and Shoton.

The DWP say they are committed to full implementation of universal credit by 2017.
