Proposals to make sub-letting a criminal offence

The Government has announced that it intends to make subletting by tenants of social housing a criminal offence.  At present social housing sector tenants who sublet without the permission of their landlord or managing agent are acting in contravention of their tenancy conditions and could be evicted if the case goes to Court and they are found guilty.  However the new proposals would mean that the tenant could face a prison sentence of up to 2 years and an unlimited fine.

This is now part of the Prevention of Social Housing Fraud Bill and has passed through the House of Commons - to become law it must pass through the House of Lords.  15.11.12.
