Policing

The Government is introducing new elected posts of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs).  There will be one for each force area.  The PCC will be responsible for :

  • establishing a 5 year Police and Crime Plan for their area
  • determining local priorities, and
  • setting annual budgets.

At our meeting on Monday 8th October 2012, our guest speaker was Karen Samuels, Head of Community Safety at Wolverhampton City Council.  She gave a presentation on the forthcoming PCC elections for the West Midlands.

She told us that there are 7 candidates so far standing in the area, and the deadline for candidates to come forward to register is the 19th October 2012.  The elections will take place on 15th November 2012, and the successful candidate will commence in post on 22nd Novemebr 2012.

There will also be a Police and Crime Panel for each area to scrutinise and support the PCC.

Members raised some concerns:

  • that the election process is too rushed and that there is not enough time to find out about the candidates 
  • that people may not vote due to lack of information, needs to be more media coverage
  • could it effect good relationships with the local police.
